Thanks for the reply, Kayin. I'm not so sure it is simple ignorance that keeps people playing games based on luck. Even with a lot of boardgames, where people know that a die roll is not a skill, players find games with lots of random elements fun (see: Arkham Horror). Hell, even I get a kick out of the occasional luck-fest. I think that if the thrill of "winning" through luck is caused by ignorance, a lot of the times it is intentional ignorance.

It might also be that getting rewarded out of chance has a thrill of its own, even if people know it's not really because the player did anything. It's kind of like walking down the street and finding a five-dollar bill.

The main thing I think about luck, however, is that it is a potent tool in design, but luck also does not coexist well with other design elements (especially skill...).

I don't think this is a very strange position....

I don't think this is a very strange position. The reason some people don't mind or even seem to like randomness is generally just ignorance to what what's going on. All they know is they periodically get rewarded for 'doing something right' and they haven't given much thought to how much of it was really them.

I can't entirely blame them, since usually randomness in games isn't as clear as discrete coin flips or anything. It's usually hidden just enough for the casual not to notice.
